About DC Solenoid

This page provides detailed information about solenoids, including their basic information, types, operation, and features. They are widely used in office equipment, automotive equipment, home appliances, industrial equipment, and security devices.

DC Solenoid Basics

  • About DC Solenoid

A DC Solenoid is an electromagnetic actuator that generates mechanical movement such as pushing or pulling by passing an electric current through a coil to generate a magnetic field, which moves a plunger (movable iron core) in a linear direction. Despite its simple structure, a DC solenoid is an indispensable electromagnetic component for automatic control mechanisms, as it can achieve reliable and high-speed operation.

Main Types of DC Solenoid

  • 1. Push Type Solenoid
A type in which the plunger is pushed out when power is applied.
    Examples: printer paper pushing mechanism

  • 2. Pull Type Solenoid
A type in which the plunger is retracted when power is applied. Examples: Coin dispensing in vending machines

  • 3. Flapper Type Solenoid A type that moves a thin plate-shaped arm (flapper) when powered.
    Examples: printer paper pushing mechanism

  • 4. Latch Type Solenoid The plunger remains in place after power is applied. This type saves power and allows for long-term locking.                                Examples: electric locks, security gates

Main applications of DC solenoids

  • 1. Office equipment
Paper transport for multifunction devices and printers, cassette locks

  • 2. Vending machines・ticket                Vending machines: Dispensing coins and bills, unlocking products

  • 3. Industrial equipment Delivery boxes, safety door locking mechanisms.

  • 4. Medical equipment and security           equipment                             Equipment lid locks, electronic locks, and access control systems

  • 5. Home appliances Rice cooker valve opening/closing control, washing machine lid locking mechanism

  • 6. Automotive equipment Automotive equipment, air conditioner control panel vibration mechanism

  • 7. Amusement equipment Opening and closing of gambling devices, medal payout mechanism

  • 8. Video equipment Strobe pop-up mechanism, shutter mechanism

How DC solenoids work

  • DC solenoid consists of a coil (electromagnet), plunger (movable iron core), and case (yoke).

1.When current is passed through the coil, a magnetic field is
          generated inside.
     2. This magnetic field attracts the movable iron core (plunger) toward
          the magnetic pole.
     3. Movement of the movable iron core (plunger) enables operations
such as opening and closing a valve or pressing a switch.
     4. When the current is cut off, the magnetic field disappears, and the
plunger returns to its original position due to spring force.

Despite its simple structure, its greatest feature is its ability to directly convert electrical energy into linear motion such as pushing and pulling.

Basic knowledge of DC Solenoid

(1) Ratings
・Continuous Duty Rating: A rating that does not exceed the specified temperature rise even when used with continuous current.
・Intermittent Duty Rating: A rating that does not exceed the specified temperature rise when current is applied for only the specified operating
time. When selecting a microswitch, it is important to balance precision and durability according to the application.

(2) Pull Force: This is the magnetic force of the solenoid and varies depending on the coil's applied conditions, operating stroke, etc.
(3)Temperature Rise: When voltage is applied to the coil, the coil temperature rises. This varies depending on the applied voltage and intermittent
application conditions, but it must be used below the specified temperature.
(4) Ambient Operating Temperature Range: The operating conditions must be determined taking into account the coil's temperature rise.
(5)Residual Magnetism: Even when the applied magnetic field is removed, some magnetism remains. This is called residual magnetism,
and it is one of the criteria for selecting a solenoid, as it can cause the attracted movable iron core to not
                                                            return to its original position.

Points to consider when selecting a DC solenoid

1.What type of operation is required? (Push, pull, flapper, latch)
2.What energy is required? (Rated voltage and current)
3.What stroke and suction force are required?
4.What are the installation space and shape constraints?
